WHAT ARE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR A SWIMMING POOL?

Service Procedures vary from site to site. They are the lists of CHECKS and TESTS that a person responsible for a pool decides must be done during a service along with the frequency needed.

Prior to servicing a swimming pool, the service tech should be 100% conversant with the items of equipment and what the individual performance expectations are, and more importantly, is the equipment able to perform as required. You should not have to rely on sanitation being able to cover for equipment or pool design inefficiencies. Sometimes, however, you don't have a choice if you are unable to upgrade the system. You do need to make this known to the owners and in writing. You need to take into account equipment inefficiencies when setting your checks and tests. You may need to backwash twice a week instead of weekly for example.

The following are examples of how we would set up the tests and checks for a specific pool. Another pool would be entirely different.

The CHECKS that could be specified for a pool.

When setting Checks you need to consider

  • Filtration Efficiency,
    • Is there sufficient filtration for the volume of the pool?
    • Is the filtration efficient?
    • Does backwashing or other filter type cleaning done frequently enough?
    • Is the backwashing done thoroughly?
    • Are the pre-filters cleared frequently enough?
    • Is the flow rate through the system too low resulting in too low a turnover rate?
    • Pump restrictions, like this hair ball wrapped around the impellor?

  • Equipment service checks
    • All equipment items need servicing or checking carried out as recommended by the manufactuer.
    • It's a good idea to include in your checks list so that they don't all require servicing on the same day.
The TESTS that are specified for most pools

You can include sensor reads in this list. Examples might be,

  • Filter Input pressure gauge
  • Filter output pressure gauge
  • ORP read on the controller at the time test sample taken
  • Chlorinator voltage (if displayed)
  • Chlorine or acid tank level
  • Water meter reading

The method of recording and saving Pool Service Procedures is up to the operator in conjunction with the pool owner.
