WHAT IS REMOTE SWIMMING POOL MONITORING?

Remote monitoring is the ability to log onto a chemical controller from anywhere on any web connected device and see what the chemical levels are in a pool, see the screen you see when standing in front of it.

Right? Wrong.

Yes, you can do that but that’s not remote monitoring. That’s remote looking. But then again that might be all you need to be able to do. Is the pool ok to open it or does someone need to go there? Doing this is the first step.

Technology is with us whether we like it or not. It still cannot beam a carton of beer into my fridge and stack it neatly, so there is still a long way to go.

The thing is, technology has been available to the pool industry for some time

In a WWI aeroplane there were not that many instruments. Biggles didn’t have too much to contend with compared to today’s pilots. Today I see us, in the pool industry, sitting way closer to a WWI pilot than a current fighter pilot. Sadly, there are those working in the industry who are yet to climb into a Tiger Moth. That is most likely costing you or your client money.

Technology and that includes AI is only just scratching the surface. Labour shortages and deficiencies in education (both key ingredients in productivity, which politicians are yet to grasp) will only result in the increasing use of technology to manage pools.

The question will be, “Who is or will be controlling it?”

That has to be you.

You need to start now, before you are confronted with a fighter jet consul without any experience. There is already an awful lot to learn and that’s not easy as you spend your available hours performing other duties such as making money and not letting people drown.  Not taking the first step will result in others controlling what you do, with the aim of selling their products, with absolutely no concern for what that is costing you. This could be happening to you now.

Remote monitoring is more about remote management. To do that you need,

• a web connected chemical controller which does a lot more than just control chemicals. Pool management starts when you get past the 'Status' screen above when using an Aquarius Ultima Controller.
• a knowledge of the site.
• site operational procedures which are adhered to.
• a testing methodology using testing equipment and procedures that will give you accurate results.
• a system that records
  • test results and chemical additions
  • checks that have been carried out
  • device readings
  • load on a pool
  • weather
  • usage
• access to anything and everything that affects the pool throughout the course of a day, including access to all site records.
• the ability to interpret all the information you have access to.

Just buying such a controller won’t solve all your problems but it certainly a great start. It takes quite a while before you can fully harness the power of a quality controller.
